A visit to Gothenburg, Sweden will leave you with lifelong memories. Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city is located on Sweden’s west coast. It is the largest university town in Scandinavia resulting in many cultural offerings for visitors.
Gothenburg was founded in the 17th century by the Swedish king, Gustav II Adolf. The city was once the center of Scandinavian ship building. In recent years the inner harbor has changed and is now home to high technology and educational institutions. Gothenburg retains its small town feel and locals and visitors alike will enjoy the many sporting events, concerts, and museums.
A great start to your holiday will be a visit to the Gothenburg Tourist Office. There are two located in town, one in Nordstan and one on Kungsportsplaten and you can schedule tours of the city at the tourist office and also pick up a city pass. The Gothenburg city pass is an absolute must for visitors! The pass grants entry to many museums, grand houses, and other attractions. The city pass will also allow you free travel on the busses and trams so that you can use the money you saved on enjoying all of the wonderful things the city has to offer.
The best way to tour Gothenburg is by tram. The trams have large windows to give you great views and travel at a slow speed so you are sure to not to miss a thing. Disembark at Gotaplatsen Square and continue your tour on foot. Locals are very proud of this square and its large statue of Poseidon. The city’s largest theater is located here, the Stadsteatern. Others attractions in the area are the Museum of Art and the Liseberg, an amusement park.
You will also want to wander the cobbled streets of Linnestaden and Haga. You will feel as if you have stepped back in time among the low, wooden homes and businesses. Linnestaden and Haga are also fantastic places to find restaurants and outdoor cafes serving local Swedish fare.
Your Gothenburg holiday will both begin and end at the Landvetter Airport. The airport is located 25 km east of the city. More than thirty flights arrive and depart daily from Landvetter. Rental car, bus, and taxi services are conveniently located at the airport.
